2021 NFL Draft: Dallas Cowboys Select Kentucky DT Quinton Bohanna

After a defensive-heavy Thursday and Friday, the Dallas Cowboys continued adding players to their defense on Saturday. In addition to Osa Odighizuwa on Friday night, the Cowboys spent another draft pick on a defensive tackle with the 192nd pick in the NFL Draft. Coming to Dallas is the 1-technique defensive tackle, Quinton Bohanna.

Bohanna comes in at 6-4 and 327 pounds and is a highly experienced player out of the University of Kentucky. Bohanna joins a 1-technique defensive tackle rotation with Brent Urban and Antwaun Woods and has an opportunity to gain significant snaps.

With his size, he’s able to take up a lot of space in the middle and plays with a lot of power and ferocity. Here’s what The Athletic’s Dane Brugler had to say Kentucky Defensive Tackle Quinton Bohanna:

“A four-year starter at Kentucky, Bohanna played nose tackle in head coach Mark Stoops’ 4-2-5 hybrid scheme, playing over the A-gap and the center. His statistical resume is unimpressive (59 tackles, 2.0 sacks in 45 games), but his value went beyond the stat sheet – his absence was obvious and affected the entire defense during the three-game stretch in 2020 when he was sidelined with a knee injury. Bohanna has the impressive size, wingspan and body mass to occupy multiple gaps and defenders, overwhelming with raw power. He is a bully inside, but he will sacrifice his discipline, balance and pad level in his pursuit of making plays. Overall, Bohanna is a role-specific prospect and offers minimal pass rush value, but he is a short-area space-eater who can maintain his spot. He projects as a rotational two-gapping nose tackle.”

Bohanna now represents the seventh defensive player the Cowboys have selected in the 2021 NFL Draft as they attempt to remake their defense in Dan Quinn’s image. His size and power will be welcomed additions to a run defense that has struggled the last couple of seasons and will help Linebackers Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch, Micah Parsons, and Jabril Cox clean in the running game.
