The Cowboys have added quite a few pieces to their defense in the last week. Carlos Watkins, Brent Urban, and Tarell Basham were signed to provide depth along the defensive front. Also, Keanu Neal was inked to a one-year deal as he’ll have a new role as a weakside linebacker in Dan Quinn’s scheme instead of safety where he made his mark in the NFL.
America’s Team was at it again Wednesday, and this time it was at a position of extreme importance, safety. Veteran Jayron Kearse has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Cowboys.

Kearse won’t be looked at as a player to compete for a starting role. However, he provides depth in case of an unfortunate injury at the safety position. In his first five years in the NFL, Kearse has logged just 1,081 defensive snaps, and nearly have of them (503) came last season as a member of the Detroit Lions when he registered a career-high in starts (7) and total tackles (59).
His value has been mostly on special teams with 1,095 snaps to date, and that’s what his role will primarily be with the Cowboys.
It’s not a splash move for the Cowboys but it’s a valuable one as they look to sure up the safety position. Veterans Damonte Kazee and Malik Hooker also had visits with the Cowboys on Wednesday, and although nothing is imminent at the moment, Kearse may not be the last safety added to the Cowboys roster before April’s NFL draft.
