In an unsurprising move following Saturday’s signing of Quarterback Andy Dalton, the Dallas Cowboys have waived previous backup Cooper Rush. The move will save Dallas $2.13 million in salary cap space.
Rush’s dismissal seemed likely after the veteran Dalton was signed. The Cowboys weren’t going to have a true competition for the backup job, and their developmental efforts have likely turned to 7th-Round rookie Ben DiNucci.

The Cowboys gave Cooper an original draft choice tender earlier this offseason as a restricted free agent. He signed it shortly after, but the one-year deal has no guarantees at this point.
This move is really a kindness to Rush. As I discussed in an article yesterday, this gives Cooper a chance to truly compete for a backup job somewhere else in the league.
Rush has looked good-to-great in the 2019 and 2017 preseasons. Perhaps one of the teams who saw those performances firsthand will have interest.
For the Cowboys, it reduces the quarterback group to the usual four players for 2020 training camp.
