On August 9, 2022, the Dallas Cowboys signed Brett Maher after releasing Jonathan Garibay to compete for the kicking position.
The signing left us, including me, scratching our heads, thinking here we go again!
When the Cowboys decided to gamble and bring Maher back and give him a chance to win the kicking job, I was left thinking nothing but negative thoughts.
Wondering how many misses it would take for the Cowboys to cut him. Boy, was I wrong?
Yesterday Maher continued his stellar season by setting an NFL record.
Maher is four-of-four from 60-plus yards in his career, the most 60-yarders in NFL history. No other kicker has more than two 60-yard field goals. (I had to look this up four or five times to confirm).
Below is a video of all four kicks he has put through the uprights from 60 yards or more, and it doesn’t even include the bazaar end to the half Sunday.
Maher made his first attempt to end the half against the Vikings. After he made it, the refs ruled the last play was under review. Very late.
The catch by CeeDee Lamb stood as called on the field, so Maher casually hit another 60-yard field goal.

Additionally, Maher became the first player in Cowboys history with three field goals from 50 yards or more in a single game. This season Maher has 7 made FGs from 50-or-more yards, the most in team history.
He also totaled 29 fantasy points, the second most by a kicker in NFL history. He was trailing only Jay Feely’s 29.5 back in 2010. Shout out to Field Yates for this information! Pretty cool.
I’ll be the first to tell you I doubted Maher could make an impact, and now he is MONEY every time he steps on the field; every single kick is aced.
I keep saying this, but Maher will probably miss a big kick at some point this season, and it happens to everyone not named Justin Tucker.
If and when he does, we fans need to hold back and not let one kick ruin it.
He is kicking a career-best 90.5%, Maher has made 19-21 field goals this season, and his only missed extra point was blocked.
It sure looks like Maher is well on making his first pro bowl.
He has an excellent chance to be an All-Pro for the NFC. I can’t think of a kicker in this conference right now that has been better than Maher.
The Cowboys still have a long way to go, and Maher needs to keep that confidence. They are going to need him. I wish Maher had been sent out last week to attempt the FG against the Packers, and He would have nailed it.
The Cowboys played a complete game in all three phases yesterday. The defense shut down one of the most high-powered offenses in football. Dak Prescott and Tony Pollard stole the show on offense, and Maher set an NFL record.
I can’t wait for Thanksgiving. Another win is coming to keep the pressure on the Eagles for the NFC East lead.
