Buy or Sell: T.J. Vasher Can Provide Much-Needed WR Depth

With Training Camp set next month, one of the biggest questions around the Cowboys is in their Wide Reciever Room. Although the franchise did make additions to negate the losses of WRs Amari Cooper, Cedrick Wilson Jr., and Malik Turner–there are still people suggesting the Cowboys need to add more depth, and I don’t blame them.

While it would be ideal to suggest they trade or add “X-receiver,” I wanted to look at an in-house player that we could be sleeping on, and that’s wide receiver T.J. Vasher.

Coming out of Texas Tech, in every draft profile you read about him, the theme around him was he had freakish size and crazy athletic abilities. After going undrafted, the Cowboys took a chance at him, and some felt because of his physical attributes, he could be a sleeper to make the roster–but injuries would ruin his rookie season.

Now, with a fresh slate, Vasher enters Training Camp (next month) with an opportunity to climb up the depth chart and be one of the starting WRs for the Cowboys on Sundays.

Beyond Lamb, Tolbert, and Gallup, you could argue there isn’t a WR who’s a lock to make the roster. While people could say WR Noah Brown and WR Simi Fehoko are your candidates (given they were on the squad last season) or newly-signed wideout James Washington– I wouldn’t pencil their names in just yet.

If Vasher puts on a show with his freakish catches as he had in college, don’t be surprised to hear fans advocating for him to see the field. Vasher stands out because of his size, and the one thing that the Cowboys need in their WRs is size.

If the season started today, you’re likely rolling out with three WRs with an average height of 6’1, and while size doesn’t always matter in WRs, the Cowboys lack a wideout who can go up and make those contested catches, and that’s why Vasher could be that guy.

I understand it may not be ideal for a unproven NFL player to make his way up the WR Depth Chart, but I’m not calling for him to become the WR1 or WR2 of some sort. But this is why im BUYING his stock early, and to me, the Cowboys simply need to find any way to get him on the field.

His athletic ability is too good to pass up, and even if you put him in redzone packages–Vasher could be a sneaky weapon. Beyond Vasher, it should be interesting to see who emerges from the WR battle, but if you haven’t noticed, I’m openly rooting for Vasher.
