Could The Cowboys Add Rob Gronkowski To Their TE Room?

On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys announced they would be placing the Franchise Tag on tight end Dalton Schultz. Unable to reach a long-term extension, this would keep the emerging star in Dallas for another year. However, the rest of the tight end group is currently in a state of flux.

Jeremy Sprinkle is scheduled to be a free agent and Blake Jarwin was released by Dallas on Friday.

As such, the Cowboys will need to add to the group. With such little cap space, they will not be in play for the big names. That means no Evan Engram or Robert Tonyan, who are likely to get a handsome paycheck. However, there is one intriguing name that sticks out in Rob Gronkowski. If he elects not to retire, could he be on the Cowboys’ radar?

Gronkowski Has A Superstar Pedigree

A household name at this point, Gronkowski’s legacy is well established. A four-time All-Pro selection and four-time Super Bowl Champion, “Gronk” is considered by many to be the greatest tight end of all time. However, at the start of the 2022 season, he will be 33 years old. While he is certainly on the backend of his career, he can still be an effective player.

This was evident when he recorded 55 receptions for 802 yards and six touchdowns in 2021.

Of course, the biggest hold-up in this deal will be whether Gronkowski elects to retire. In his eleven-year career, he has always played with Tom Brady. With Brady now retired, would he want to play for another team? If so, Dallas makes a lot of sense.

With an owner in Jerry Jones who would love to add a superstar like Gronkowski, he would certainly feel at home on one of the NFL’s most popular teams. He would not be wasting his time either as the Cowboys are a team who expect to compete this season.

While his days as a number one option are behind him, he could complement the Cowboys’ talented skill position players quite well.
