Cowboys 2020 Draft Breakdown: Offensive Edition

When it comes to the 2020 NFL Draft, we as fans, are even more in the dark this year than we have been in years past. Due to the coronavirus Pro days, private workouts, and pre-draft visits were canceled, meaning the tools we typically use to gauge which prospects the Dallas Cowboys have shown an interest in are basically nonexistent.

We aren’t completely without resources though. We still have one thing to go one…the current Dallas Cowboys roster. Based on the players currently under contract and the depth at each position, we can guesstimate as to which positions they could potentially target come draft day.

I know it doesn’t help much as to which prospects the Dallas Cowboys could be targeting per se, but it does help narrow down the positions that need the most help. Unfortunately, that’s really the only tool we have at our disposal. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the offensive side of the ball to see where the Cowboys currently stand.

QUARTERBACK

Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, Clayton Thorson

Dak Prescott is the unquestioned starter for the Dallas Cowboys and after being tendered – which he signed on March 18 – it looks as if Cooper Rush will return as the QB2.

Clayton Thorson spent last year on the Cowboys practice squad and could theoretically push Rush for the backup job or make a case for keeping three QBs on the active roster.

I don’t think the Cowboys will spend a draft pick on the QB position in the 2020 NFL Draft. I think the most likely scenario is they sign an undrafted free agent to come in to compete and provide a camp arm.

My pick: Bryce Perkins, Virginia (Undrafted Free Agent)

RUNNING BACK

Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard, Jamize Olawale, Jordan Chunn

Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard are fully entrenched as the Dallas Cowboys top running backs and Jamize Olawale’s 2020 option was picked up for him to return as their fullback.

Jordan Chunn has been on the active roster, released, brought back and placed on the practice squad on more than one occasion in the past few years. Depending on what the new coaching staff thinks of him, he could prevent them from investing any draft capital on the RB position.

I think it’s unlikely the Cowboys use a draft pick on the RB position, but if they do they may want somebody who brings something a little different to the table than what they currently have on the roster.

My pick: Antonio Gibson, Memphis (4th round)

WIDE RECEIVER

Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Cedrick Wilson, Devin Smith, Ventell Bryant, Noah Brown, Jon’Vea Johnson

Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup are the only proven receivers currently on the Dallas Cowboys roster and the unquestioned starters.

Cedrick Wilson has shown signs he’s capable of working himself in the mix, but he, Devin Smith, and Noah Brown can’t stay healthy. None are guaranteed anything.

Ventell Bryant could be facing a possible suspension due to an offseason DUI arrest and Jon’Vea Johnson – who spent last year on the practice squad – could be longshots to make the team.

I have no doubts the Cowboys will invest in the WR position at some point in the 2020 NFL draft, quite possibly with their first-round draft pick.

My pick: Chase Claypool, Notre Dame (3rd round)

TIGHT END

Blake Jarwin, Blake Bell, Dalton Schultz

The Dallas Cowboys signed Blake Jarwin to a four-year, $22 million contract extension to hopefully step in and replace Jason Witten as their starting tight end.

Blake Bell was a free agent addition to add some much-needed depth and potentially be the TE2. He is a more proven in-line blocker than Jarwin at this point in their careers.

Dalton Shultz hasn’t done much in his two years with the Cowboys, whether it’s because of lack of opportunities or lack of talent remains to be seen.

The 2020 TE draft class isn’t the best, but there are several options throughout the draft the Cowboys could target to add some much-needed depth to the position.

My pick: Dalton Keene, Virginia Tech (5th round)

TACKLE

Tyron Smith, La’el Collins, Brandon Knight, Mitch Hyatt

Tyron Smith and La’el Collins should once again return as the Dallas Cowboys bookends at offensive tackle unless something unforeseen happens. Tyron Smith trade?

Brandon Knight saw time at right tackle in the place of an injured La’el Collins last year as a rookie and could be in line to replace Cam Fleming as the swing tackle. He also has position flex to play guard.

Mitch Hyatt was added to the active roster at the end of the 2019 season to protect his rights and could possibly work himself in the mix in 2020.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Dallas Cowboys drafted an OT at some point in the 2020 NFL Draft. They need a new swing tackle and somebody to eventually replace Tyron Smith.

My pick: Saahdiq Charles, LSU (4th round)

GUARD

Zack Martin, Connor Williams

Zack Martin will once again be the Dallas Cowboys starting right guard, but who they play at left guard isn’t as firm.

Connor Williams could be the top choice to be the Cowboys’ starting LG, but his inability to stay healthy could mean the job is open. Right now he’s the favorite, but another free agent (Ron Leary?) could change that.

The Cowboys without a doubt need more interior line depth and could very well invest one of their draft picks on the OG position at some point in the 2020 NFL Draft.

My pick: Damien Lewis, LSU (3rd round)

CENTER

Joe Looney, Connor McGovern, Adam Redmond

Joe Looney is probably the favorite to replace the recently retired Travis Frederick as the Dallas Cowboys starting center this year, but Connor McGovern will probably be given every chance to earn that right.

Adam Redmond provides much-needed depth and has the versatility to play guard or center, just like Looney and McGovern.

Just like OG, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the Dallas Cowboys decided to use one of their draft picks on an interior offensive lineman who can play center at some point in the draft.

My pick: Tyler Biadasz, Wisconsin (4th round)
