The Cowboys have had an open spot on their training camp roster since practices began last week. It is now filled after Dallas signed third-year CB Kyron Brown, previously employed by the New York Jets.
Brown was undrafted free agent for the Jets in 2019 who spent most of that year on their practice squad. He was called up in November to the active roster for three games and started the last one, but a quad injury landed Kyron on injured reserve for the rest of his rookie season.
In 2020, Brown spent the entire year on the Jets’ reserve/PUP list. He was waived last May and has remained a free agent until now.
Despite his unheralded entry to the NFL, Kyron got some notice during the 2019 preseason for the Jets and eventually found his way into a starting role. He has desirable size at 6’1″ and about 200 lbs., which we know is part of how he wound up with the Cowboys.

Many thought that Dallas would be using their open roster spot to sign free agent Safety Malik Hooker next week. Hooker’s recent visit with the team went well and, according to reports, they are waiting for Malik to go through the five-day COVID-19 protocol before a signing can be made.
Adding Kyron Brown now does nothing to change that plan. It only means that now Dallas will need to release a player to make room for Hooker.
That player will probably be one of the Cowboys’ other DB prospects. Veterans Deante Burton and Maurice Canady at cornerback, both 27-years-old, could easily fall victim to a younger option in Kyron Brown. There’s also Steven Parker at safety, entering his fourth season, who would be replaced by Hooker.
Of course, the ripple effects in late July and early August may only go so far. Kyron Brown may not make Dallas’ final 53-man roster, but whoever loses their roster spot next week probably wasn’t going to either.
Nevertheless, it’s good to see the Cowboys continuing to assess options and churn the bottom of the roster. We’ve seen plenty of surprising success stories in Dallas and hopefully Kyron Brown will be the next one!
