Cowboys Announce Number Assignments & Changes for New, Returning Players

Yesterday the Cowboys confirmed jersey number assignments for five new players and changes for eight returning players ahead of the 2022 season. With this year’s draft soon to come, current talent is no doubt wanting to claim their numbers of choice before the next influx of rookies join the organization.

Don’t worry, none of the marquee Cowboys have changed numbers so far. All of your Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and Trevon Diggs jerseys are safe for now.

Here is the list of returning players who are changing numbers in 2022:

  • CB Kelvin Joseph – #1
  • CB Jourdan Lewis – #2
  • CB Anthony Brown – #3
  • RB Rico Dowdle – #23
  • S Israel Mukuamu – #24
  • RB/FB Sewo Olonilua – #33
  • TE Ian Bunting – #89
  • DE Chauncey Golston – #99

The biggest name of this bunch is Anthony Brown, the only full-time starter on the list. He appears to be joining a movement toward single-digit numbers among Dallas’ cornerbacks with Joseph and Lewis. Trevon Diggs, who wears #7, appears to have started a trend.

Along with these changes for current talent, five new Cowboys were assigned jersey numbers for the upcoming season:

  • K Chris Naggar – #19
  • RB Ryan Nall – #35
  • DE Dante Fowler – #56
  • WR James Washington – #83
  • DT Josiah Bronson – #94

Fowler is going back to #56, his original number when coming into the NFL, after playing in a #6 jersey last year for the Falcons. Washington will hopefully add some shine back to the #83, which is most recently remembered in association with Terrance Williams.

An interesting note from this bunch is giving the #94, previously hallowed ground given its legacy with Charles Haley and DeMarcus Ware, to a relative nobody in DT Josiah Bronson. An undrafted free agent in 2021, Bronson was signed by the Cowboys in January after spending most of the year on the Saints and Browns practice squads.

I guess we’re not the only ones wanting to put Randy Gregory behind us.
