Cowboys Draft Cornerback Trevon Diggs With 51st Pick

The Dallas Cowboys continue their strong performance in the 2020 NFL Draft with their most recent second-round pick. With the 51st pick, the Cowboys have drafted Trevon Diggs out of Alabama.

The #33 prospect in Dane Brugler’s rankings (fourth cornerback) will fill fit right into the Cowboys’ defensive backfield. After letting Byron Jones walk in free agency, cornerback undoubtedly became the single biggest need for the team.

“Overall, Diggs needs to clean up his technique and discipline in coverage to reach his full potential, but he has shown improvement in those areas and projects as an NFL starter due to his size, twitch and competitive nature.” Dane Brugler on The Athletic.

With Jourdan Lewis and Chidobe Awuzie set to hit free agency after the upcoming season, a rookie’s arrival helps the team in the long run. However, Diggs should be set to make an immediate impact.

He played a ton of time in the slot in Alabama, but his size should allow him to play on the outside at the next level and become a true CB1. Diggs was seen by many as an option in the first round, yet the Cowboys found him in the middle of the second round as they took just the second cornerback of the day.

Speculations were made early on Friday about the possibility of the Cowboys trading up to pick at the top of the second round, but they ended up staying put with the 51st pick and avoided spending draft capital to get their guy.

With the top safeties remaining being drafted picks before (McKinney-Giants, Delpit-Browns, Winfield-Bucs), the decision to go for a cornerback was made easy for the Dallas Cowboys. Fortunately, the team made an insurance signing in free agency by getting Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at a low price.

The Dallas Cowboys still hold the 82nd overall pick in the third round later tonight, which we’ll be covering here at Inside The Star.
