Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy: The Super Bowl Is The Goal

It’s been a long time since the Dallas Cowboys sat upon the throne in the NFL.

To be honest – they really haven’t been that close to reclaiming the top spot and winning a championship since they last did so during the 1995-96 season. Despite a couple first round byes and numerous playoff appearances, Dallas has had zero success past the Division Round in the new millennium.

New head coach Mike McCarthy is looking to change that, however, and even scoffs a bit at the notion that his team would be looking to do anything other than win the Super Bowl this season. McCarthy spoke to the media this week after practice, confirming that the Super Bowl is the goal for the 2020 Dallas Cowboys.

“I think conversation like that frankly, respectfully, is nonsense. If you’re not trying to win the Super Bowl, I don’t know what you’re even doing in this business…I’ve always been very up front about it with every team I’ve ever coached: We’re in this to win a championship. Make no bones about it.” – Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy is a Super Bowl champion himself, of course, winning at AT&T Stadium with the Green Bay Packers during the 2010-11 season. He inherits a Cowboys roster which is considered by most to be one of the best in the NFC, though they will have to compete with teams like the defending conference champion San Francisco 49ers for conference supremacy this season.

Under Jason Garrett in 2019 this superbly talented roster failed to break .500, finishing 8-8 and missing the postseason. The Cowboys have fallen into a bit of a pattern of “good year, bad year” in recent seasons, but under McCarthy they hope to string together winning campaigns going forward.

There’s no doubt the Cowboys have the offensive firepower to compete and beat any team in the NFL, but will they finally get out of their own way in those big moments which have defined the Garrett-Cowboys in the past?

We can certainly be hopeful now that a new lead man is in town. One that has done it before on the biggest stage.
