Coming off a disappointing effort in last week’s loss in Arizona, the Cowboys look to extend a winning streak today.
The Cowboys come into today with a 32-24 record overall in Week 4 contests. Dallas has also won its last two Week 4 games.
Dallas is 16-9 at home overall, leaving them a 16-15 road record in Week 4 games.
They have had six bye weeks in the fourth week – more on that later.
They lost one scheduled Week 4 game to the 1982 strike.
Dallas has faced 24 of the other 31 teams at least once during this week in an NFL season.
The Cowboys are 5-11 against AFC teams – which is today’s opponent — when playing a Week 4 game.
The Browns (5-0) and the Raiders (3-0) against Dallas during Week 4. Dallas is 2-0 against both the Jets and the Titans/Oilers franchises.
A Week Too Early
Given last week’s loss to Arizona, the Cowboys probably would have preferred to play the Cardinals this week instead.
When facing the Arizona franchise in the fourth week of a season Dallas is 7-0 all-time, their best record against any team in Week 4 contests.
The Cowboys went 4-0 against the Cardinals when the team was located in St. Louis. Dallas is 4-0 in road games against the Cardinals in the fourth week too.
Day Of Rest
In the 33 years since the NFL adopted the system, the Cowboys have drawn a bye six times in Week 4.
That includes three straight seasons when Dallas had the week off after their third game between 1992-94. The last Week 4 bye came in 2010 following a 1-2 start.
Streaking Cowboys
Dallas has had three notable winning streaks involving Week 4 games between 1966-88.
The Cowboys won seven straight between 1966-1972. Dallas then won four straight between 1975-78.
From 1980-88, even as the franchise began a slow decline, the Cowboys collected eight straight Week 4 wins. Only the missed 1982 strike game broke up that run.
During that 23-year stretch, the Cowboys posted a 19-3 record in Week 4 games. They are only 12-16 since.
When it comes to losing streaks, Dallas has only had two that lasted longer than two games.
Between 2008-2013, the Cowboys dropped five straight games in the fourth week.
Their woes were broken up only by the 2010 bye week.
The Cowboys dropped four in a row between 1962-1965. They lost two games each to the Browns and Eagles.
Dallas started off their franchise history by losing five of its first six Week 4 games.
Against The Patriots
The Cowboys have never faced the Patriots in the fourth week of any season.
The earliest they’ve played New England in any season was a Week 3 game in 1981, a 35-21 road win.
Dallas is 8-6 all-time against the Patriots. The Cowboys won the last meeting in 2021, a 35-29 overtime win on the road.
Dallas won the first seven meetings between the teams, including a 44-21 win in the first game ever played at Texas Stadium.
The Patriots had won six in a row before the 2021 victory by the Cowboys.
Dallas is 4-2 at home against New England, having lost the last two games played in Texas. The teams are 4-4 at New England.
After winning the first three road games, the Cowboys had lost four in a row in New England before the 2021 victory.
Last Team Standing
The earliest the Cowboys have faced the Raiders in any season is Week 4. Unfortunately, Dallas has lost all three times they’ve played the Raiders in Week 4.
That leaves only the Baltimore Ravens as the only NFL team Dallas has not faced at least once over the first four weeks of any season.
That streak will hold for one more week as the earliest the Cowboys have played the Ravens in any season is the sixth week.
That game ended in a 31-29 Ravens win at Baltimore in 2012. After a Tony Romo pass to Dez Bryant, Dallas failed on the tying, two-point attempt with 32 seconds remaining.
