With the NFL draft in a few days, Jerry Jones spoke with the media Monday about what the team might do with their first-round pick, No. 26, on Thursday.
As usual, Jerry Jones said in the first round the Cowboys could trade up, trade down, or stay at 26 and pick.
We all know Jerry loves to talk and get people’s heads spinning, but the odd thing is, I could see the Cowboys doing any of the three.
“I do catch myself thinking about trade, and we’ve done some of that. You’re trying to get a higher value, get more points,” Jones said on Monday.
I would stay away from trading out of the pick altogether, but if they have their eye on someone that they could grab early in the second round but would be a reach in the first, sure.
I don’t buy into the team moving up in the draft. Although it has happened a handful of times in recent memory.

They traded up in 2010 to draft Dez Bryant, DeMarcus Lawrence in 2014, and Tyler Biadasz in 2020. They even traded down in 2021 and landed Micah Parsons.
The one that sticks with me the most was in 2012. Dallas moved up from No. 14 to No. 6 to select Morris Claiborne. What an awful mistake that was. He only produced four interceptions in five seasons—a rare miss from them on draft night.
When Thursday night arrives, the logical thing to do is keep the pick. Sit at No. 26, and see who falls into their lap.
Jerry even noted Monday that they drafted Ezekiel Elliott to high in 2016. So I don’t expect them to trade up for someone like Bijan Robinson.
They will probably take him if he is on the board at No. 26. I doubt he will be, but time will tell.
I am not the GM for a good reason!
A top wide receiver will likely be there for the team to take, but I would lean for a guy like Joey Porter Jr., a corner from Penn State. Even a guy like Jack Campbell, a senior linebacker from Iowa.
Jerry Jones: "The problem is the players I'm looking at, if they get to us, they've got a few warts on 'em. How'd they get to you?"

If it was up to me and only me, I would draft Dalton Kincaid or another tight end if there.
The Cowboys did well this offseason by adding Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore via trades. Doing so is allowing them to sit back without a substantial urgent need at any position other than adding depth.
I will be one happy fan if I hear Jay Flowers, Joey Porter, or Dalton Kincaid.
It would be hard to hate if they took Robinson if somehow he is still there, but please do not trade up for him.
I will cover the first round on Thursday evening and will get out a story as quickly as possible after they decide regarding pick No. 26.
Whether that is trading up, down, or staying put, I will be on it.
Let’s hope to hear a difference-maker get called on Thursday. It has been a while since this team went into a draft without a glaring hole.
