Cowboys Trade Rumors: Any Interest in WR Malcolm Mitchell?

Surprisingly enough, every NFL player who has supposedly been put on the trade block gets linked to the Dallas Cowboys in some form or fashion. That is why today we are going to take at hard look at a current New England Patriots player who has just had a for sale sign placed on him.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the New England Patriots have “been seeking a potential trade partner” for their young Wide Receiver Malcolm Mitchell. The former fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft could be playing for a different team in 2018, but will it be as a member of the Dallas Cowboys?

After pretty much revamping the entire Wide Receiver position, it certainly makes sense the Dallas Cowboys could have an interest in Malcolm Mitchell from the outside looking in. There is a lot of unknown about the Cowboys current WR core and how they will perform in 2018, but I don’t think they are in the market for someone like Mitchell right now.

With training camp just now about to get underway they will probably like to see firsthand what they have before looking for outside help. They did sign two veteran WRs in the offseason (Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson) and used two of their draft picks on the position (Michael Gallup and Cedrick Wilson) in hopes of finding more production. They even traded for Tavon Austin, who could be a factor in the passing as well. That doesn’t bode well for them making another trade.

You see, you also have to take into consideration that Malcolm Mitchell missed all of last season due to a knee injury, something that caused him to miss games during his time in college at Georgia as well. It’s an injury that could impact his availability to be healthy enough to even start the 2018 season.

With all of that in mind, it’s hard to imagine the Dallas Cowboys being even mildly interested in even acquiring what it would take to make a trade for Malcolm Mitchell. However, if they do want to gamble, it probably wouldn’t take more than a late round draft pick to make the deal.

Mitchell is just a fourth-round draft pick, who has basically just one year of solid production (32 receptions, 401 receiving yards, 4 TDs). Factoring in his knee problems dating back to college, it becomes abundantly clear that the risk probably isn’t worth the reward. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Patriots ended up releasing him all together.

Then, and only then would I try to bring him aboard if I were the Dallas Cowboys. In that scenario, it wouldn’t cost them hardly anything, basically giving them a free look at a promising young WR if he can overcome his reoccurring injuries.

Do you think the Cowboys show any interest in WR Malcolm Mitchell?
