When Allen Hurns signed with the Dallas Cowboys, he knew his #88 jersey would not follow him from Jacksonville. That number already belongs to his prospective teammate, Dez Bryant.
So today, Hurns announced what new number he would sport as a Cowboy:
I’ll be rocking #17. Go get ya jerseys 👀 https://t.co/ivV24ApLdm

The #17 was just made available by the retirement of quarterback Kellen Moore, who has moved from the roster to the coaching staff.
Head coach Jason Garrett also wore #17 during his playing career. It was also infamously worn by QB Quincy Carter, who we remember for all the wrong reasons.
The last noteworthy receiver to wear the number was special teams ace Dwayne Harris, who was with the team from 2011-2014.
Given the legacy of #88 in Dallas, it’s unlikely that Allen Hurns would get to take the number even if Dez Bryant ends up released or traded before the offseason’s over. It has previously belonged to Michael Irving and Drew Pearson, lifelong Cowboys, and would saved for the next rookie with big expectations.
