This afternoon, the NFL awarded the compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL Draft. Compensatory picks are handed out based on a formula that figures in the net number and quality of contracts a team gains or loses in free agency. Not every team in the NFL received a compensatory selection in the upcoming draft.
Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Dallas Cowboys were awarded a 5th round pick, officially number 179 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft after losing Cole Beasley in the 2019 free agency period.

The Cowboys joined the Denver Broncos as the only teams granted 5th round compensatory picks. In total 32 picks were awarded with the New England Patriots leading the way with four compensatory selections in this year’s draft.
The Dallas Cowboys now have seven picks throughout the draft with which to work.
Heading into the next phase of player acquisition, the Cowboys have a ton of holes, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They need to have a bounce-back Draft after not receiving much in the way of contributions from their 2019 rookie class.
The Dallas Cowboys will now have the following picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
- 1-17
- 2-51
- 3-82
- 4-123
- 5-164
- 5-179
- 7-231
