Dallas Cowboys Draft: Patrick Surtain, the Forgotten Man

There is a growing swell of support for Kyle Pitts to be the Dallas Cowboys selection with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. As rumors circulate of a potential decline in his draft stock, the possibility of Penei Sewell appears to be growing. The buzz surrounding two prospects that otherwise were unavailable a month ago has overwhelmed the support for Alabama Cornerback Patrick Surtain.

But it shouldn’t. The buzz on Sewell and Pitts will fade as we edge closer to draft night and they’ll resume their place among the top nine picks in the draft. So as the draft approaches, it will become clear that Patrick Surtain will be the selection for the Cowboys.

Why?

First of all, he’ll most likely be available. Aside from some mock drafts that have projected him to go number nine to the Broncos, the Cowboys have been by far the most popular destination for the Alabama cornerback.

As the top of the draft is littered with quarterbacks and skill position players, Surtain, arguably the top defensive player in the draft will find his way to 10.

In this draft, there isn’t a player that fits a glaring need for the Cowboys and is the best at his position like Surtain does. Though there might be some rookie growing pains, Surtain slides right into Dan Quinn’s defense at cornerback opposite of Trevon Diggs.

Even with Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis, and Maurice Canady on the roster, the Cowboys have a glaring need for an outside cornerback.

Surtain fits the bill. He has the requisite size and length to play in Dan Quinn’s scheme and showed fantastic coverage and ball skills in college. His speed and athleticism will allow him to transition to the NFL game a little more smoothly than some other positions.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement surrounding two of the elite prospects in the draft, rightfully so, the league isn’t going to forget about them either. Certainly anything’s possible, as we saw last year with CeeDee Lamb. But as the draft date approaches, don’t forget or minimize the player or the impact that Patrick Surtain can have for the Dallas Cowboys.

It may not be as flashy or as exiting of a pick as Kyle Pitts or Penei Sewell or one of the top wide receivers in the draft, but there isn’t a player that makes as much sense for the Dallas Cowboys as Patrick Surtain does. Even if Kyle Pitts or Penei Sewell fall to 10, the Dallas Cowboys may still go with Surtain, because that’s just how much sense he makes for the Dallas Cowboys.
