The buzz for local Southern Methodist University Wide Receiver Courtland Sutton remaining in state with the Dallas Cowboys has died down considerably since the start of this offseason. Not only have the Cowboys added free agent receiving talent in Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson, but the team has also showed interest in other top WR prospects.
Cowboys Nation has heard about D.J. Moore and Calvin Ridley for a while now, with the hype around these Maryland and Alabama prospects growing as the Cowboys have official pre-draft visits set with both.
Jason Garrett’s first stop on the pro day circuit was at Alabama, to see not only Ridley but numerous prospects that could greatly help his Dallas Cowboys. Garrett’s most recent stop does not rule out WR Courtland Sutton though, as he was the only NFL head coach at SMU’s pro day.

Prior to the Scouting Combine, Sutton had been sliding down most draft boards – being passed by seemingly more athletic and dynamic players in Ridley, Moore, or Memphis’ Anthony Miller.
The 6033 (6′ 3 3/8″) receiver tested brilliantly at the Combine though, and should remain a top pass catching prospect at next month’s draft. Whether or not the Cowboys will even pull the trigger on another WR at 19 remains to be seen, as they’re understandably getting a look at all of the nation’s top targets.
The idea of adding “one more guy” to new WR Coach Sanjay Lal’s room, to round out the Cowboys’ passing attack, may very well win out in this team’s war room at the end of April.
If it does, and Calvin Ridley is already off of the board as this draft’s WR1, expect Head Coach Jason Garrett to pound the table for Courtland Sutton.
Sutton would of course join current Cowboys slot receiver Cole Beasley as two players from SMU on the roster, although Beasley’s long-term status with the Cowboys is in question following a down year – set to play on an expiring contract in 2018.
