Dallas Cowboys Hire Doug Nussmeier as Tight Ends Coach

The Dallas Cowboys appear to have filled another vacancy in their coaching staff today. Doug Nussmeier, who most recently had been the offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators, will reportedly be hired by Dallas their new Tight Ends Coach.

Nussmeier is no stranger to current Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan. When Nussmeieir was playing quarterback at the University of Idaho from 1990-1993, Linehan was the Vandals’ OC and quarterbacks coach.

They again worked together from 2006-2007 with the St. Louis Rams. Nussmeier was the QB coach for Linehan’s staff while he served as Head Coach of the Rams.

Doug Nussmeier has been in the college ranks since 2008 as an Offensive Coordinator. His last the stops were Florida, Alabama, and Michigan; three of the country’s biggest programs.

Adding Nussmeier seems to be more about his overall talent and experience, plus familiarity with Linehan, than a specific connection to tight ends. He has only played and coached quarterbacks specifically, though his time as an OC means he’s had to touch on all positions.

Nussmeier will be the third different TE coach in as many seasons. Mike Pope retired after the 2016 season and his replacement, Steve Loney, retired in January.
