After losing Jameill Showers to an ACL injury against the Cincinnati Bengals and watching Xavier Woods sustain a somewhat serious hamstring injury that may prevent him from playing Week 1, the Dallas Cowboys added some depth to the safety position by signing journeyman Jeron Johnson.
The Cowboys are signing Jeron Johnson, according to a source. He worked out for the team Tuesday and last played in a regular-season game in 2016 for the Seattle Seahawks. He is the second safety the Cowboys have signed inside the last 24 hours. https://t.co/G5hITRlFLE

Jeron Johnson is the second safety (Dominick Sanders) the Dallas Cowboys have signed in as many days. Although they probably aren’t considered starting quality players, they will provide much-needed depth until Xavier Woods can get back on the field.
Johnson, is a 30-year-old journeyman safety who was most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was originally an undrafted free agent signing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2011 where he spent several seasons, his time overlapping with Kris Richard. Surprisingly enough, he is also a Boise State product, a college Institute the Cowboys are all too familiar with.
Johnson’s familiarity with Kris Richard’s defensive scheme should help him hit the ground running so to speak. It’s unlikely he will be asked to be anything more than a solid rotational player, but he could end up being nothing more than a camp body until Woods is back up to speed.
Even though the Dallas Cowboys have added Jeron Johnson and Dominick Sanders to provide more depth to the safety position, it probably doesn’t negate the possibility of signing George Iloka. The Cowboys are supposedly intrigued by Iloka and his experience, but “at the right price.”
