Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas is reporting that Defensive Tackle David Irving will miss the start of the 2018 training camp for the Dallas Cowboys, with approval from the team. It hasn’t been an easy offseason for Irving who came under suspicion of domestic violence back in April when an ex-girlfriend took to social media to make her accusations as well as calling the police.
After the Frisco Police Department investigated the incident, no charges were filed. Since then Irving has filed for sole custody of their daughter, which was granted.
Not long after the news of Irving’s custody hearing, news came down that Irving would be suspended four games to start the 2018 season for violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy. It will be the second straight season in which Irving will miss the start of the regular season due to suspension. In 2017, it was for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).
As I said, it’s been a long offseason for Irving, and so it should come as no surprise that he isn’t quite ready to join the team to start training camp.
Because of the suspension, this shouldn’t be much of a concern as he won’t be allowed to practice or play with the team the first month of the season. His absence, while not helpful, allows players like Jihad Ward, Datone Jones, and others to get more reps in with the first team defense during camp.
Maliek Collins to PUP
Defensive tackle Maliek Collins will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues to recover from his broken foot. Inside The Star Staff Writer Jess Haynie discussed Collins’ PUP placement and his injury history.
Terrance Williams’ Status Unknown
It’s unknown how available Wide Receiver Terrance Williams will be to start training camp, as Garrett discusses:
Jason Garrett says Maliek Collins will open training camp on PUP, likely won’t be available for the first few weeks.
Garrett’s optimistic Collins will be the only guy on PUP to open camp. He’s not 100% sure on Terrance Williams’ availability Day 1, but hopeful. #cowboyswire

Football is Right Around the Corner
Though it’s only a preseason game, the Dallas Cowboys will open their schedule on August 9th as they travel to play the San Francisco 49ers.
As we go through the season, let’s remember that preseason games are intended to decide those last 10-15 guys on the roster. You won’t see a lot of scheming to win or a bunch of wrinkles in the system; those are saved for later.
So, if the Dallas Cowboys don’t look like their dominant, efficient self on offense in the preseason, don’t worry, they aren’t going to give away what they want to do in games that don’t matter.
