The Dallas Cowboys front office brass has gone to considerable lengths over the last couple of weeks to decry the notion that they need to add any other players to the roster through four games. To a man, Mike McCarthy, Stephen Jones, and Jerry Jones have downplayed the need to pursue a player like Earl Thomas or Damon Harrison to help bolster a defense that is playing historically bad football.
They like their options internally. They think it can be fixed with time and patience. They think they’re close.

Jerry Jones even alluded to the salary was cap this morning on his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas as a reason why they can’t sign any players.
It doesn’t sound like significant help is coming for the Cowboys outside of the building.

It won’t be long before Dak Prescott’s name and future contract negotiations is drug into the conversation.
I’m not buying any of that and neither should you.
They may like their guys, but their guys aren’t getting it done. They may like what’s coming back whenever Sean Lee, Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown, and Leighton Vander Each come off IR, but that’s still several weeks away. If the Cowboys aren’t careful they could be 1-5 in just a couple of weeks.
The Dallas Cowboys defense has been terrible this season, especially in neutral situations. When they’ve been behind and know that teams are just attempting to run out the clock, they’ve been better.
The Cowboys will probably beat the New York Giants this week, but no game is a given. Even if they do, don’t buy the idea that they’ve bounced back. This defense is still bad and with Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals coming up in week six, the defense will once again be exposed.
The Cowboys defense needs help. There’s no question about it. They could use an infusion of talent at all three levels of the defense. Just like they helped the offense in 2018 by trading for Amari Cooper, the Cowboys need to do something to give the defense a spark. Whether by trade or through a free agent signing, something has to be done.
They may not have an offense as good as this in years to come and the Cowboys can’t waste it with a defense that is going to breaking all kinds of record in 2020 for the wrong reasons
