Well it finally happened! All-Pro Safety Jamal Adams has been traded! No it wasn’t to the Dallas Cowboys like many of us around Cowboys Nation were hoping. It was the Seattle Seahawks, who seemed to swoop in out of nowhere to meet the New York Jets trade demands.
We’ve agreed to a trade with Seattle.
We receive:
S Bradley McDougald
1st round pick (2021)
3rd round pick (2021)
1st round pick (2022)Seahawks receive:

Multiple first-round picks, a starting caliber player (Bradley McDougald), and a long-term deal to acquire Jamal Adams is a king’s ransom the Dallas Cowboys weren’t going to come anywhere near matching. They weren’t even willing to part with a first and third-round draft pick, which is what Michael Irvin said the Jets were seeking for their All-Pro safety. Nevertheless, it’s still tough to miss out on such a difference making kind of player.
There’s quite a few fans around Cowboys Nation who were disappointed Jerry Jones and Company didn’t fork over what the Jets were asking in exchange for Jamal Adams. There’s no doubt Adams would’ve been a huge upgrade for the Cowboys defense, but what they would have had to give up to complete the trade was simply too much.
I’m as disappointed as the next fan, however, there’s no way I would’ve given up with the Seattle Seahawks did in order to acquire Jamal Adams. They’re forfeiting a lot of their future – both in draft picks and money – hoping Adams is a player who can help take their defense to the next level. Sadly, they are kind of robbing Peter to pay Paul in my opinion.
Forfeiting as much draft capital as the Seahawks are could come back to hurt them in the future. First-round draft picks are highly coveted, but for a team who is probably in “win now” mode they must have believed Jamal Adams is a player who can make them a serious Super Bowl contender now.
The Dallas Cowboys no doubt would’ve absolutely loved to bring Jamal Adams aboard to help solidify and upgrade their secondary, but not at the expense of their future. A future which is right now somewhat cloudy due to the fact they’re starting Quarterback Dak Prescott is only signed through the 2020 season and the unknown 2021 salary cap decrease. Both likely played a pretty big factor in the decision not to give in to the Jets trade demands.
I believe this was a wise move on the Dallas Cowboys part. They can now use all of the draft capital saved by not trading for Adams to help upgrade and improve the team with younger and more affordable players. Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his staff can now mold the team as they see fit instead of just working with what they inherited from the previous staff.
Anyway you look at it though, the Dallas Cowboys made the right decision after seeing what the Seattle Seahawks had to give up to acquire Jamal Adams.
