Cowboys Nation was rocked yesterday by the tragic news of Marion Barber III’s untimely passing. There was outpouring of condolences and love for the former Dallas running back throughout social media, and a particularly touching tribute came from Jason Garrett.
Barber was found dead in his home yesterday during a wellness check by Frisco, TX police. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed. He was only 38 years old.
Garrett was offensive coordinator from 2007-2010, Marion’s last four seasons with the Cowboys. It was in 2010 that Jason became interim head coach after Wade Phillips was fired. Barber was released the following offseason.
In their four years together, Garrett witnessed and benefitted from Barber’s memorably punishing, relentless running style. Marion went to his only Pro Bowl in 2007 during Jason’s first year as offensive coordinator.
In the wake of Barber’s death, Garrett shared the following through his personal Twitter account:
His physical style and relentless spirit were infectious! Showed up in how he practiced! Showed up in how he played in games! It was impossible not to notice #24! He leaped off the tape! As great a player as Marion was, he was an even better person.

Earlier this morning, Bill Parcells also added his thoughts on Marion Barber’s passing. Parcells was Dallas’ head coach in 2005 when Barber was drafted and also coached him in 2006.
Bill Parcells on the death of Marion Barber to @dmn_cowboys I hold him in high regard. I hate to bring up football now because that’s not important but he was almost like a perfect player. In this respect, he could run, block, he could catch, he was tough and he was always there.
