The NFL trade deadline is at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The Dallas Cowboys, who are currently 2-6 and on a three-game losing streak, having struggled mightily on both sides of the ball since Quarterback Dak Prescott was lost for the season after suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 5 vs the New York Giants.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones joined 105.3 The Fan this morning to talk about a variety of topics. When asked about the possibility of the Cowboys making a trade before Tuesday’s deadline Jones said there’s a high improbability that’ll happen.
“I think your question, normally, would get a pretty — a response that would say, ‘I don’t expect anything to happen,’ but that’s not fair,” Jones said. “Because the way we’re structured, the way we can do business, we can make decisions if the opportunity comes up, and we can make them in a short order. We’ve prepared every scenario that you can think of, almost, walk around like that. And so, if we do get an opportunity, we can make that call.
“And you know, I’m in the mood, but certainly not in the mood to do anything that would knowingly negatively impact our future, both this weekend, as well as we look ahead for now and years to come. So, what does that mean? What does that mean, is that I don’t expect anything but if something should come up of any nature, we’ve certainly got the ability to entertain it and make a decision on it.”
If the Cowboys do make a trade there’s one player who won’t be involved according to Jones and that’s Aldon Smith, who currently leads the team with five sacks after a five-year absence.
“I think it’s been a positive how he’s evolved,” Jones said. “He’s a different player than he was, but that doesn’t make it a negative … I like his focus. I like his attitude. I like his attitude about the future. I’m not interested in doing anything about Aldon.”
The Cowboys have recently done some shuffling of their roster. Last Tuesday, they traded Defensive End, Everson Griffen, to the Detroit Lions for a conditional draft pick. One day later, they released Defensive Tackle Dontari Poe and Cornerback Daryl Worley. On Monday, the Cowboys finalize a trade that sent a seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans for Defensive Tackle Eli Anoku to add some depth on the interior.
All eyes will be on the Cowboys today as the fan base impatiently waits for a splash, albeit an unlikely one.
