News floated around this week that Cowboys defensive back Jourdan Lewis is expected to start training camp in late July on the PUP list.
Lewis is still rehabbing from a foot injury (Lisfranc) he sustained last season.
Lewis has been a very productive player on defense after being a third-round pick in 2017; his best year came in 2021.
Starting 13 games, he had three interceptions and one forced fumble. Lewis added 61 tackles (47 solo).
The Cowboys’ defensive backs are good with adding Stephon Gilmore via trade in March.
DaRon Bland’s emergence last season while Lewis was out makes it hard to think he could return and have his old role back.
Bland had five interceptions and seven passes defended last year.
The rest of the DB room includes Nahshon Wright, Kelvin Joseph, and 2023 draft pick Eric Scott Jr.
Another name to keep an eye on that could see snaps at corner is Israel Mukuamu.
The Cowboys will get next to nothing from Joseph; I would even trust Scott over him at this point. He has shown nothing in every chance he’s had.
Yet the team won’t give up on him just yet.
Wright will be fine, and if Mukuanmu does well in his snaps at corner, the team might find themselves in an interesting situation.
If Dallas were to move on from Lewis, the team could save $4.7 million in cap space.
That doesn’t seem like a lot, but CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs will both get an extension, either this offseason or next.
That money, plus what they already got from cutting Ezekial Elliott, could help fund them.
I don’t think the team would cut him, but I didn’t think Jerry Jones would bounce Zeke either. Yet it happened. (Smart).
Stephen Jones said the team might consider adding depth at corner with Lewis going on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform).
Dallas signed edge rusher Ben Banogu on Wednesday to bring their total to 89 players. One player shy of the 90 that will be needed when they begin training camp in Oxnard, Calif., on July 25.
Lewis will start on the PUP and go from there. Nobody knows what the team will do with him. If he can return to form, the backend for Dallas is loaded.
This team has an excellent chance to be one of the best in football. Not only because of the defensive side of the ball, but the offense looks good, too.
They have done everything right this offseason to try and capitalize on the win-now window.
They still have players coming back and decisions to make on them, but up to this point, I don’t think they could have done anything much better.
The talking can only go on for so long. I will be the first to tell you if the team doesn’t do what they need to do this season. It’s about over.
