In a surprising move that absolutely no one saw coming the Dallas Cowboys re-signed Cornerback Jourdan Lewis to a three-year contract extension yesterday.

While nearly all of us were anxiously waiting to see which free agent CB the Dallas Cowboys would target in free agency it seems like they were working on bringing back their own. With No. 26 back in the mix it’s unlikely we see any other additions to the position until the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.
Current Dallas Cowboys CB Depth
- Trevon Diggs
- Anthony Brown
- Jourdan Lewis
- Maurice Canady
- C.J. Goodwin
- Reggie Robinson II?
Okay. So this group doesn’t look that great on paper, but it does give the Dallas Cowboys options prior to the NFL Draft. Trevon Diggs is coming off a pretty good rookie season and should be even better in Year 2 and both Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis have inside/out versatility. Believe it or not, but that pretty much covers the basics.
I get it though. Many of us were wanting to see the Dallas Cowboys go out and sign a free agent CB like Patrick Peterson or Richard Sherman. While both of those players have a more proven track record that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re worth the money. The same can be said for a lot of the CBs still available on the open market as well.
With Jordan Lewis back in the mix the Dallas Cowboys can now focus on addressing other positions in free agency and then have their pick of CBs in the 2021 draft class. It’s not completely impossible the Cowboys could have their pick of corners with the 10th overall pick. Suddenly, things start looking a lot better.
For arguments sake let’s say the Cowboys draft Caleb Farley or Patrick Surtain II with the 10th overall pick. You then slide one of the two in opposite Trevon Diggs and have either Anthony Brown or Jourdan Lewis playing in the nickel. I don’t know about you, but I’d say that upgrades Dallas’ secondary from what they deployed just a year ago.
Re-signing Jordan Lewis doesn’t necessarily mean the Dallas Cowboys are done addressing the CB position in free agency. If they think they can still upgrade the position in a cost-effective way they could easily release Anthony Brown and/or Maurice Canady for more salary cap relief. But, as things stand right now they look to be set at the position heading into the 2021 NFL Draft.
