When it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, there are more questions than answers right now surrounding this team. Their season may be all but over, but the decisions they make from here on out will have a huge impact on their future. It’s that future I want to talk a little bit about today.
The one thing we really know about the Dallas Cowboys right now is that changes are coming. Whether it’s to the personnel or coaching staff, we could be seen quite a few new faces come and go this offseason. Instead of doing a deep dive into all of that though, I want to focus on one player in particular… Kicker Kai Forbath.
Kai Forbath was signed a little over two weeks ago to replace Brett Maher, who was an utter disaster this year for the Dallas Cowboys. Forbath may have just been here a short time, but he’s already made a pretty big impact on the field. In fact, he’s been almost perfect.
In just two games, Kai Forbath has made all six of his field goal attempts, with a long from 50, and all of his extra points as well. He’s brought stability to the Dallas Cowboys kicking game, something that never was going to happen with Brett Maher, but his future and the future of the Cowboys kicking situation is in doubt after this season.
The Dallas Cowboys will have no shortage of personnel decisions to make this offseason, but deciding what to do with Kai Forbath could be just as important as any other. They can’t afford to roll the dice on someone like Maher again, not at a position as an important as kicker. That’s why I think Forbath should be retained beyond this season.
I don’t know how you feel about all of this, but for me it’s a no-brainer. He’s brought stability to the Cowboys kicking game and there’s no reason to believe he can’t continue to do so. He’s a proven veteran after all and has been through the thick and thin of things. And as a added bonus he’s not going to be very expensive, meaning they could cut ties and walk away if needed.
If it were me, I’d go ahead and make sure Kai Forbath was locked up and my kicker heading into training camp if I were the Cowboys. They can then bring in as much competition as they want and decide who the better option is. After all, there’s no reason to throw all their eggs into one basket again. No sense in making that mistake twice.
