The Cowboys finally inked franchise quarterback Dak Prescott to a contract extension this week, making him (in his own words) a “Cowboy for life.” Prescott has obviously earned the deal, beginning with an all-time rookie season and improving year after year to get to the point he’s at today.
Dak Prescott is the unquestioned leader of America’s Team, and the reaction from his peers when the news of his contract broke should tell you all you need to know about him as a person.
Cowboys great Michael Irvin is also aboard the hype train. Irvin joined ESPN’s Stephen A Smith earlier this week to make a bold comparison for Dak Prescott…Tom Brady.
“We have the closest thing in the National Football League to Tom Brady at quarterback now. That’s what we have. Because Dak Prescott has the ability to do what Tom does, and he has the leadership like Tom” – Michael Irvin.
Anytime you bring up the name of the most accomplished quarterback of all time, you’re going to get a strong reaction. But Irvin’s point makes sense. Prescott has shown his capabilities as a leader and as a quarterback, putting him in the upper echelon of stars around the league. He is the definition of a franchise quarterback, and has just the right temperament/personality to be the face of the Dallas Cowboys for the next decade.
Now, I’d personally be happy to see Prescott win the number of rings that Brady has, but that obviously will depend on what ends up around him. Tom Brady is an all-time great quarterback, but there’s no question that coaching and defensive talent have gave him an edge during each championship run.
Football is the ultimate team sport. As great as we expect Dak Prescott and this loaded offense to be in 2021, they’ll need to get some timely stops on the other side of the ball to compete with the conference’s elite.
