Ever since Mike McCarthy was hired to be the next Dallas Cowboys head coach, every fan has been wondering about offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s future.
Moore has had a meteoric rise to OC of the Cowboys – going from third string quarterback to play-caller in three seasons. Despite letting most of Jason Garrett’s staff go, McCarthy decided to keep Moore around as the offensive coordinator, and has now proclaimed he will get to call plays for another season.
Mike McCarthy met briefly with the DFW print press this evening. Some notable highlights:
– sounds like Mike intends to have Kellen Moore call plays. He wants to build his offense off Kellen, including keeping the existing language.

This is pretty shocking news to me. McCarthy has gone as far to say he would “never give up” calling plays in the past, and was the play-caller in Green Bay for all but about 12 games the entire time he was their head coach. To not only allow Kellen Moore to be the play-caller, but to concede some of the terminology of the offense as well, is massive news. And a really good sign of what’s to come in the McCarthy era.
Either Mike McCarthy liked what he saw out of the 2019 Cowboys offense under Moore, and doesn’t want to interfere with Dak Prescott’s development at quarterback, or this was part of the deal he struck with Jerry Jones when he was offered the job.
Or, at least, that’s how I see it.
Regardless, Cowboys fans should be excited that Kellen Moore will continue to have massive input into the offense, and will keep growing as a play-caller in 2020.
