Mike McCarthy’s Return to Green Bay Confirmed for Week 10 of 2022

While we’ll have to wait until tomorrow for the full release of the NFL’s 2022 schedule, one appetizing morsel has already been confirmed. The Dallas Cowboys will visit the Green Bay Packers in Week 10, which will be Mike McCarthy’s first game against the Packers since being dismissed by the team in 2018.

McCarthy was Green Bay’s head coach for 13 seasons from 2006-2018, winning the 2010 Super Bowl and enjoying numerous division titles and playoff trips in other seasons. But after going 4-7-1 in the first 12 games of 2018 and seeing his relationship with QB Aaron Rodgers deteriorate, Mike was fired in the middle of the season.

This 2022 matchup will not only allow McCarthy to revisit Lambeau Field but also play against his former MVP quarterback. Rodgers remains the gold standard for NFL passers and has won the award the last two years in a row.

The Cowboys have their own unpleasant modern history with the Packers. Green Bay eliminated Dallas from the 2014 and 2016 playoffs, plus had dominated the overall series 8-2 since Aaron Rodgers became starting QB in 2008.

The last time that the Cowboys played the Packers in any venue was in 2019, Jason Garrett’s last season as Dallas’ head coach. Green Bay RB Aaron Jones scored four touchdowns in one of the all-time shocking fantasy performances, and the Packers held off a late rally from the Cowboys to win 34-24 at AT&T Stadium.

History runs deep between these franchises, going all the way back to the 1966 and 1967 seasons when they met in two-straight conference championship games. The Cowboys were twice denied appearances in the first two Super Bowls thanks to Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, and those famous Packers teams.

No matter how far back the wounds go, meetings between Dallas and Green Bay always feel like special events. Two of the NFL’s most storied franchises will once again meet in 2022, and the reunion of Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers will certainly add some extra fuel to the fire.
