The Dallas Cowboys are by all accounts going to lose Cornerback Byron Jones as he’s set to hit free agency in two weeks. This has made the corner position that much more important as the Cowboys figure out their approach to the 2020 season.
There are plenty of mock drafts that have the Cowboys going corner within the first few rounds. Names like Florida’s CJ Henderson, Alabama’s Trevon Diggs, and LSU’s Kristian Fulton have been linked to the team as day 1-2 options. However, with the need at corner becoming more crucial with the departure of the aforementioned Jones and Anthony Brown also hitting free agency, the Cowboys could double-dip at the position in the draft. If so, Nebraska’s Lamar Jackson is a sleeper option to take a look at.
Jackson was one of the best safety prospects in the country prior to wearing the red and white of the Cornhuskers. Once he arrived, he appeared in all 13 games and recorded 17 tackles and a sack. He took his game up a notch in his sophomore campaign with 38 tackles and three passes defended. As a junior, he had an up and down year, however, he did manage to register 28 tackles, seven passes defended, a forced fumble and the first two interceptions of his career.

Finishing your collegiate career strong is the goal of every player, and Jackson did just that in 2019. He would have his best season ever with 40 tackles, 12 passes defended, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a sack. This would lead to Jackson being named the team’s Defensive MVP and Second-Team All-Big Ten.

Jackson has the size at 6’2 208 pounds to match up with bigger receivers in the NFL, however, he does come with some limitations. Tracking the ball instead of reading receivers and mediocre run support will definitely be things he’ll have to work on going forward if he wants to succeed in the NFL. With depth at cornerback needed for the Cowboys, Lamar Jackson is an intriguing name to keep an eye on in April.
