Dak Prescott’s third-quarter touchdown pass to Dalton Schultz versus the Carolina Panthers was a historic one.

The six-yard score was one of three in the quarter, set up by a 47-yard Ezekiel Elliott run. It was just the seventh receiving touchdown of Schultz’s career, and although it might’ve looked run-of-the-mill to most fans, it was one for the books. The touchdown was the 2,500th in the Cowboys’ storied history, according to Cowboys historian Mike Burke.

It seems Schultz still may be unaware of the play’s significance, though. After the game, he said it wasn’t the first time they’d run the play this season.

“It was the same play we ran last week, actually,” Schultz said. “Dak did a great job of getting the ball out… and we scored. Easy.”

Touchdown number 2,500 for the Cowboys was 61 years in the making. On September 24, 1960, Eddie LeBaron connected with Jim Doran for a 75-yard score versus the Pittsburgh Steelers to mark the very first Dallas Cowboys touchdown.

Today, the Cowboys sit atop the NFC East at 4-1 and are showing no signs of slowing down. Schultz is having a career year, Ezekiel Elliott is drawing comparisons to his electric 2016 season, and Dak Prescott is making a case for both Comeback Player of the Year and NFL Most Valuable Player.

While Dak’s toss to Schultz might’ve been the Cowboys’ 2,500th regular-season touchdown, the team certainly isn’t stopping at 2,500. Since that score, they’ve already notched six more, with five of them coming in Sunday’s 24-point win versus the New York Giants. Prescott isn’t focused on the past, though.

“Whatever the record is, it’s about the next game,” Prescott said. “We’re going to enjoy this… but we’re going to get in early and prepare for the next week.”
