Derrius Guice has yet to play the Cowboys since the Redskins drafted him in the 2nd Round of the 2018 NFL Draft. However, the young running back will have to keeping waiting as he now recovers from a knee surgery that will knock him out of Sunday’s game between Dallas and Washington.
Veteran Adrian Peterson, who was inactive last week after Guice was named the Redskins’ starting RB, will return to action as the projected starter in Week 2.
#Redskins RB Derrius Guice had surgery to trim a torn meniscus this morning, sources say. He is in Pensacola meeting with Dr. James Andrews, who performed the procedure. Guice is out indefinitely, as the team considers its roster options.

The current timetable for Guice’s recovery is 6-8 weeks. If all goes well, he may finally get to play against Dallas in the Week 17 finale.
Derrius missed all of 2018 with an ACL injury suffered in the first preseason game of his rookie year.
Now Washington turns back to Adrian Peterson. He sat last week with Guice, Chris Thompson, and Wendell Smallwood being named over him on the 46-man game day roster. Thompson is the Redskins’ 3rd-down back and Smallwood plays on special teams.
As the starting RB last year, Peterson ran for 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns despite being 33 years old. He ran for 99 yards against the Cowboys in their first meeting in October, but was held to just 35 yards in the rematch.
The big difference in those games was the presence of Alex Smith at QB, who was injured the second time that Dallas and Washington played. Now the Redskins have turned to Case Keenum, who just put up 380 passing yards and three touchdowns last week against the Eagles.
How will Adrian Peterson fair in his 2019 debut? Will the Redskins be able to ruin the Cowboys’ good vibes from Week 1, or will they get caught in a rising steamroll?
