He only participated in two training camp practices after the injury. The hope was for McGovern to challenge Connor Williams for the starting left guard spot, and create a situation where the Cowboys could have their five best offensive linemen on the field. Now, his entire 2019 season is in jeopardy even though it’s uncertain if he’ll need surgery to repair this latest bump in the road.
The biggest beneficiary here is backup Guard Xavier Su’a-Filo who started eight games last season in relief of Connor Williams. A likely roster cut casualty, now he will probably make the final 53-man roster and the active 46-man roster against the New York Giants on September 8th.
This is a tough break for the rookie out of Penn State who had high hopes of making an immediate impact in 2019. He could be placed on injured reserve at Saturday’s final roster cuts and then be put on IR a day later which would allow him to return at some point before seasons end.
