The Cowboys spent much of the third day of the 2019 NFL Draft re-building their running back depth. First, by selecting Memphis running back Tony Pollard, the Cowboys got their “versatile” receiving back who should add a dynamic element to Kellen Moore’s offense.

Then, in the seventh round, the Cowboys dipped back into the Ohio State running back well, taking Mike Weber to serve as their true RB2 behind Ezekiel Elliott.

Fans’ hopes for both these backs seem to be sky-high heading into their rookie seasons, especially if their presence can help shoulder some of the load that Elliott has singularly carried as of late. Seventh round running back Mike Weber left practice Saturday morning, however, after injuring his knee. And according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News, he is set to undergo an MRI on that knee.

Obviously this is a scary sentence to read for any Cowboys fan, but early indications are that the situation is not too serious.

Fingers crossed that this is the case, of course, and for Mike Weber to get back on the field as soon as possible. Because, if the Cowboys actually plan to utilize these rookie backs the way they have hinted at, he will be important to have around come September.
