Should Cowboys put in a Waiver Claim for Former Packers S Josh Jones?

The Green Bay Packers have officially given up on Safety Josh Jones, who they drafted in the second-round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Jones is now subject to waiver wire rules, meaning any team in the NFL can put in a claim in the hopes of acquiring his services. The Dallas Cowboys should be one of those teams.

It was nearly 3 months ago to the day I wrote an article titled “Should Cowboys Consider Trading for Disgruntled Packers S Josh Jones?“, so you know I’ve had my eye on Jones for a while. He is someone who I believe could come in and be an upgrade at the safety position, whether as a potential starter next to Xavier Woods or as a backup. And now that it wouldn’t take future draft capital to acquire him, I’m hoping the Dallas Cowboys agree and put in a waiver claim.

Other than Xavier Woods, the Dallas Cowboys couldn’t be too happy with their current depth at the safety position. George Iloka looks like a failed free agent signing and Darian Thompson may barely squeak through roster cuts mostly due to lack of other options. This means Jeff Heath will likely reprise his role as a starter opposite Woods this year, but rookie S Donovan Wilson could have something to say about that.

Wilson has been the one safety who has come close to challenging Jeff Heath this offseason. The Dallas Cowboys however may be reluctant to start a rookie over a veteran they are more comfortable with. But, he could earn the starting job at some point in 2019. All of that isn’t a given though, making Josh Jones an intriguing option if they can somehow claim him off of waivers.

Where the Dallas Cowboys fall in the waiver priority is a problem though. There will surely be a team higher than them on the waiver wire to put in a claim for Josh Jones. That however shouldn’t prevent the Cowboys at the very least attempting to bring him aboard. There’s a chance he could be exactly what they’re looking for.

Do you think the Cowboys should put in a waiver claim for Josh Jones?
