Lost in all of the chaos that can only be described as Free Agency Frenzy, the Atlanta Falcons decided to part ways with their No. 1 Cornerback Desmond Trufant.

On just about any other day this would’ve been one of the bigger headlines around the NFL, but it kind of got lost in the shuffle yesterday with all of the chaos that took place around the league. With all of the head scratching trades, franchise/transition tags, contract extensions, the Desmond Trufant news slipped through the cracks.
Trufant’s release by the Atlanta Falcons wasn’t due to poor play or anything like that. This was strictly a money-saving move on their part in order to get a little more salary-cap relief. At just 29 – 30 in September – he still has a lot of good football ahead of him.
With Byron Jones gone, the Dallas Cowboys are as good of a landing spot as any for the former Falcons CB. Surprisingly enough, there’s even a connection between the two that could help land the former Pro Bowler (2015).
The Dallas Cowboys new Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan held the same title with the Atlanta Falcons when they drafted Desmond Trufant 22nd overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. It was just a short two years (2013-2014), but the connection is there. Could a reunion be in order?
With Byron Jones and Anthony Brown both possibly leaving in free agency and with Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis entering the last year of their rookie contracts, CB is arguably the biggest need for the Cowboys right now. Desmond Trufant could very well be the answer to both problems.
This is a move that makes a lot of sense for the Dallas Cowboys. In Trufant the Cowboys would be getting an immediate Byron Jones replacement and someone who’s familiar with the way Mike Nolan runs things. He can help the secondary transition much easier, while also providing a bridge the next few years during the CB makeover. It would also keep them from having to “reach” for a CB in the draft.
Sounds like a win-win, right!?
I guess the only thing left to do now is for the Dallas Cowboys to pick up the phone and convince Desmond Trufant Dallas is the best place for him to continue and quite possibly end his professional career. Hopefully the Cowboys brass will quit twiddling their thumbs and finally make some moves, like inking Trufant.
