Outside of retaining their franchise quarterback, adding talent to their weak defense should be the Dallas Cowboys’ top offseason priority. And despite issues both at defensive tackle and linebacker, filling in the back-end of their secondary probably tops that list of needs.

Luckily for America’s Team, this offseason features a loaded safety class. One which the Cowboys should look to dip their toes into and spend a little money in order to improve their team.

If they’re looking to improve their 2021 roster without sacrificing their future value at the position, Jets safety Marcus Maye could be the perfect solution to the team’s safety woes.

The former second round pick of the Jets was largely overshadowed by Jamal Adams nationally during his time there, but he’s proven to be a solid safety in his own right.

And, honestly, he’s proven to be a much better fit with what the Cowboys are going to need out of their safety than Adams would have been. Maye was the fourth highest graded overall safety by Pro Football Focus in 2020, and finished with 2 interceptions and 11 pass deflections. He’s a bit of a more traditional safety than someone like Adams, with the ability to play over the top in deep third or middle of the field coverage.

Letting Marcus Maye play in coverage while Donovan Wilson is the team’s hard hitting box safety would be a nice combination for the Cowboys to have going forward.

The Cowboys 2020 season will go down in history for two things: horrible injury luck and a putrid defense. While their run defense may have taken the cake, they couldn’t stop the pass very well either.

Marcus Maye would immediately help out a pass defense which is barren on talent and numbers, while still being youthful enough to be considered a building block for the future of the team.
