A Dallas Cowboys football blog

Should the Cowboys play their starters against Washington on Sunday?

This should be a good debate; while many fans are curious about how the Dallas Cowboys’ season will end, I have been seeing many fans who say they already know what’s to come.

Some people are pretty confident that the Cowboys will be playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won’t advance past the 5th seed in the playoffs.

I explained how the Cowboys still have a chance to grab the first overall seed in a recent article, so I won’t be spending much time revisiting that.

This is mainly just a debate over whether or not it’s a good idea to have your starters play during the season finale.

In my opinion, it’s a bad idea for many reasons.

To start, the chances of the Philadelphia Eagles losing to the New York Giants (who aren’t playing any starters) is very low.

I cannot see the Giants winning that game on Sunday. They already have themselves locked in at the 6th seed and are unable to change that. Meanwhile, the Eagles also probably won’t play too many starters but will still win based on the toughness of their team.

On another note, the Washington Commanders will be playing Quarterback Sam Howell. This will make them much easier to beat.

Cowboys fans are also forgetting who their backup quarterback is — Cooper Rush can 100% take care of business here, with or without their starting wide receivers.

Now, with that said, am I saying the Cowboys would win the game if they started Cooper Rush? No, but I am pretty positive that he would put up a fight and probably come out with a win.

I think right there is my main argument.

The Cowboys have great backups at all positions, so I don’t see why it’s a bad idea to bench your starters to keep them healthy for the playoffs. This is a critical decision for the Cowboys coaching staff but I think the answer is obvious.

You’re gonna have a lot of backups and rookies on the Commanders team that will be trying to prove a point to their coach that they should be a starter. How do they prove that point? By nailing our guys so hard into the turf that they cause injuries.

I’ve seen it a million times and I’m not interested in seeing it again for my team. I don’t want to see Dak Prescott or any other starter get injured in this game.

I want the whole team to be at full strength before the playoffs. All of this talk has reminded me of when Dak got injured back in 2020 against the New York Giants. One simple play is all it takes for your star quarterback to be out for an entire season.

It’s a scary thought that I think Head Coach Mike McCarthy needs to take into consideration.

Even if the Eagles did lose and the Cowboys grabbed the top overall seed, is that even worth banging up your guys this Sunday?

It’s a tough decision for sure, but I feel like if the coaching staff is smart, they’ll pull the starters and let Cooper Rush and the backups try to take care of business.
