Bleacher Report released some ideas for trades that would transform the league next season. The Cowboys made the list.
They suggested the Cowboys trade a 2023 second-round pick for the Steelers’ Diontae Johnson. Johnson has not yet signed an extension with the Steelers and will become a free agent at the end of the 2022 season.
Is he worth a second-round pick? Johnson was a Pro-Bowler last season, catching 107 passes for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. That is a very solid year. Well worth what you may find in the second round. He does not miss a lot of games and is always available.
In my opinion, the Steelers may be rebuilding? Ben Roethlisberger retired this offseason, and Pittsburgh will start either Mitchell Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, or rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett in Week 1. Those guys have big shoes to fill for a guy who will wind up in the hall of fame.
Dallas has CeeDee Lamb, drafted Jalen Tolbert, and signed Johnson’s former teammate, James Washington, and the No. 2 receiver Michael Gallup is coming off a torn ACL. I would not hate this trade at all. We know the Cowboys’ offense won’t lead the league in scoring again, but Johnson would help keep the passing game going.
Now again, this was just something a bleacher report put out on Monday, but honestly, the trade makes sense when you look at it from both sides. A Steelers team you figure to be rebuilding getting a second-round pick and can spend it on whomever they like if they don’t resign Johnson.
Dallas gets a wideout coming off his best season as a pro. I think it is a win-win for both sides, but we all know outside of when Jerry Jones traded for Amari Cooper, he hardly pulls the strings on these types of things and always says the roster they have is fine.
