Veteran free agent named “best fit” for Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have been very silent this offseason, only signing Eric Kendricks for Mike Zimmer and bringing back Ezekiel Elliott.

With the offseason programs starting to heat up, the Cowboys have been named a “best fit,” by ESPN for veteran New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Right off the jump, let me tell you I understand that is at the end of his career and isn’t that type of player anymore.

Thomas has battled multiple injuries over the past four seasons, which has limited him to just 20 games. Still, a one-year deal would make plenty of sense for the Cowboys and Thomas, who is looking to re-establish himself as a formidable threat on the field.

The Saints designated Thomas as a post-June 1 release, which saved them $1.2 million against the salary cap for 2024. Thomas, who finished the season on injured reserve with a knee injury, was listed as a failed physical designation.

You lock him in behind CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, why not? They brought in Zay Jones for a visit weeks ago, but he decided to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, a bit of a shocker there.

My guess is that His price tag was probably a little bit to much for Dallas, anyway.

Jones signed for 4.5 million, I would like to think Thomas would be cheaper than that.

What Would It Hurt?

“When healthy, Thomas can still uncover and work multiple levels of the field,” ESPN’s Matt Bowen wrote. “However, the injury concerns are legit, as the 31-year-old wide receiver has played in just 20 games over the past four seasons.”

Last season, Thomas had 39 catches for 448 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. Ten games, that is not bad at all. If he can stay on the field, he is 100% worth a cheap one year deal.

Thomas has recorded 565 catches for 6,569 yards and 36 touchdowns throughout his career.

He made three consecutive Pro Bowls starting in 2017, also earning First-team All-Pro honors in 2018 and 2019 after leading the NFL in receptions in back-to-back seasons and in receiving yards in 2019.

We aren’t sure what we are going to get from Jalen Tolbert, but he is expected to be the WR3 after they cut Michael Gallup a little over a month ago.

Starting To Get Annoying

I wish they would get CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons taken care of and then we could see what happens with Dak Prescott.

I feel like I somehow get this into every post I make, but this team is going to likely have to pay three plays 60 million dollars or more.

The schedule is out for this team and it looks tough early, but as it gets later they should be okay, six out of the last eight games are at home, that is the way you want to finish. I see maybe 10 wins as of now.

We have a long to go before we see Cowboys football again, but I wouldn’t hate them just brining in Thomas on a cheaper deal to add depth to the wide receiver room. If he can’t stay on the field and has to be cut so be it.

Let’s see how the rest of the summer shakes out, but Dallas plans on signing all these guys, they better do it before the market gets even higher.

If Dallas does not sign Lamb before Jefferson, we are in trouble, that number is going to be huge.

This signing won’t happen, but it is always fun to sit around and think about what a run down wide receiver would do to help Dallas. It would still be worth bringing him in to see if he can stay on the field.
