What will the Dallas Cowboys do with Chaz Green?

The Dallas Cowboys offseason is going to be full of tough decisions that will have an impact on the 2018 roster. It’s no different than any other offseason, but there seems to be more to it this year than in years past. One such decision they need to make is what will they do with Chaz Green?

Chaz Green was the Dallas Cowboys third round draft pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. His career so far in Dallas has been disappointing to say the least. He has struggled staying healthy, which has prevented him to living up to his potential.

Yes, you read that right. I use the word “potential” to describe Chaz Green.

Chaz Green has the talent to become a starter in the NFL, but I know most Cowboys fans wouldn’t agree. A lot of Cowboys Nation will only remember how poorly he performed against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 after being asked to fill in for Tyron Smith at left tackle.

The Falcons game is definitely a day Chaz Green would like to forget. He made Adrian Clayborn look like the second coming of Lawrence Taylor. Clayborn registered six QB sacks that game alone, but only finished with 9.5 for the season. Green’s performance that day was largely responsible for that.

Byron Bell would eventually take over in the Falcons game and continue to do so the rest of the season, making Chaz Green pretty much an afterthought. But, Bell is no longer under contract, whereas Green has one year remaining on his rookie deal.

The Dallas Cowboys will certainly be looking to not only upgrade parts of their offensive line, but their depth at each position as well. Whether or not Chaz Green will be part of that equation has probably yet to be determined.

Green’s future with the organization likely depends on what the Cowboys are able to do in free agency and through the draft. As things stand right now, there are quite a few questions about the offensive line heading into the 2018 season.

Who will start at left guard?

Who will be the swing tackle?

Who will be the backup guard/center?

I think we can all agree that the experiment to convert Chaz Green from a tackle to offensive guard failed. He never quite looked comfortable playing on the interior. But, can he be depended on to be the swing tackle once again?

This is the tough decision the Dallas Cowboys will have to make. Green isn’t going to cost very much to keep on the roster. I think the Cowboys will let this play out up until the start of the 2018 season and see if he can finally tap into the potential they saw in him coming out of Florida.

This probably won’t sit well with a lot of Cowboys fans, but until they have a better option, they can’t completely move on from Chaz Green.
