Will Terrance Williams be Relegated to Backup Duty in 2018?

There will be plenty of things to pay close attention to now that the Dallas Cowboys are about to get into their offseason program, but one position in particular might stand out above the rest… the wide receiver position.

The Dallas Cowboys knew they had to do something to upgrade the position after witnessing everyone dramatically underperform in 2017 and made it a focus of the offseason. It was an approach that will now result in quite a few new faces in the Cowboys WR meeting room.

Allen Hurns, Deonte Thompson, Michael Gallup, and Cedrick Wilson are the incoming new faces and their additions will certainly shake up the Cowboys WR depth chart. It’s really going to be interesting to see how all of this ends up shaking out, but I think it could spell trouble for Terrance Williams.

As things stand right now, I think Terrance Williams is at best WR3 on the Dallas Cowboys depth chart and could fall much further before the 2018 season gets underway. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t have chosen a worse time to break his foot and missed time.

It kind of slipped through the cracks with all of the excitement of free agency and the 2018 NFL Draft, but No. 83 broke his foot a few weeks ago and is expected to miss the majority of the offseason workouts. He could be back in time for training camp, but these kind of foot injuries have a way of lingering. So, who knows when he will actually be ready?

With Williams out, this is the perfect opportunity for other wide receivers to step up and catch the eye of the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff. I’m not just talking about these incoming rookies and free agents, but someone like Noah Brown has a chance to really make some noise.

The Dallas Cowboys can’t afford to play favorites at this point, especially since they decided to release their best WR Dez Bryant a few weeks before the draft. They have to do what’s best for the team, which means Terrance Williams could take quite a fall down the depth chart if things work out the way I believe they will.

You see, while Williams is out nursing his foot injury, I think Michael Gallup will move up to WR3 on the depth chart and become the Cowboys new “Z” receiver. This is a position Williams has held down for the past several years, but it looks as if time might have caught up with him.

Of course, Gallup isn’t the only WR who could surpass Williams on the depth chart. I believe Noah Brown is ready for a bigger workload entering his second year in the NFL. He probably should’ve been utilized more often last season, but that’s neither here nor there now.

So, it’s not out of the question Terrance Williams ends up falling two spots on the depth chart, ending up as the WR5. That means he will likely end up being relegated to backup duty for the 2018 season.

Do you think Terrance Williams will be relegated to backup duty in 2018?
