Would The Cowboys Consider Safety Eric Reid?

It’s officially football season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still talk offseason-type free agent rumors.

The Cowboys have been linked to every free agent or disgruntled safety around the league the past three years, but haven’t actually landed any of them. Earl Thomas rumors are back and better than ever of course, but this latest safety suggestion is a bit fresher.

Bleacher Report wrote up the best free agent fit remaining for every NFL team, naming Eric Reid and the Cowboys to be a match made in heaven.

“Frankly, Eric Reid is a better fit for the Cowboys defense than Earl Thomas. That’s not to say Reid is as accomplished or as talented, but the emergence of free safety Xavier Woods made it easier to understand why Dallas didn’t immediately pounce on Thomas upon his release from Baltimore.”

I’m not sure I’d go that far, but I definitely agree that Reid would be a nice scheme fit with the Cowboys. Eric Reid has stuffed the stat sheet during his career as well, with 11 interceptions, 519 tackles and a Pro Bowl appearance. Plus he’s still only 28 years old.

The Cowboys haven’t placed a premium on the safety position in quite some time, and while some fans hoped the Mike McCarthy era would start with a change there, it hasn’t been the case yet. Maybe Eric Reid would be the one to change the tide.

Darian Thompson is a fan favorite in Dallas, though, so we will see if he can live up to the standards he set for himself last preseason.
