WR Michael Gallup: “Just Trying To Get My Hand Free” Vs Jalen Ramsey

The Cowboys’ season opening loss to the Rams ended in one of the more controversial ways possible, with the referees deciding to take away what would’ve set up at least the game tying field goal by calling offensive pass interference on Michael Gallup.

Not only did the penalty take away the long completion, but it also backed them up to an impossible third down situation at the end of the game. Once that flag was thrown, the game was over.

It looked like a questionable call when watching live, and the countless replays have made the flag even more head-scratching. The man called for the penalty spoke with Charean Williams on Wednesday to give his thoughts on the play.

“I mean, honestly, I guess I just (need to) beat him a little bit more at the line so we’re not play fighting down the field for a good 10 yards…That’s the best I can put it. I was just trying to get my hand free, so (therefore) it looked like I pushed off. But it is what it is” – Michael Gallup.

Ramsey definitely sold the flag a bit, flopping backwards to make it appear that he’d been shoved hard enough to effect his coverage. But the fact is, Gallup beat him on that play and Dak Prescott made the throw which could’ve saved the game.

Instead, the Cowboys now sit at 0-1. And there’s no amount of reflecting on a questionable call that will change the outcome.
